The View From Everywhere Else

GOOD NEWS SUNDAY IS LIVE

After the week that was — Beijing, BRICS, Cooper, the Knesset, all of it — here are five things that went right anyway.

① In March, renewables beat natural gas as America’s leading source of electricity for the first time in history. The grid doesn’t care who’s in the White House.

② A man’s grandmother had love and nowhere to put it. So he built her a stand on the sidewalk where strangers could sit down and talk. People came back. They brought friends.

③ In rural Zimbabwe, community health workers are riding bicycles from home to home to deliver HPV vaccines to girls in the communities that clinics miss. No summit. No breakthrough technology. Just people on bikes going where the need is.

④ Mexico just pledged free universal healthcare for all 120 million of its citizens. Americans are routinely told that’s impossible. Mexico is building it anyway.

⑤ New fossil evidence from Ethiopia shows our earliest ancestors weren’t alone — they shared the landscape with another hominin species 2.6 million years ago. Human evolution was never a straight line. It was an extraordinary mess of possibility. We’re the part that made it.

“Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government.” — Thomas Jefferson, 1789
